Get to know the candidates - Kawerau District Council

News

We recently approached candidates standing for all wards, community boards and mayoral positions at the 2022 local body elections to ask them: What are your aspirations for sport, active recreation and play in your area? If elected to council, how would you like to see physical activity supported in your community?

We received responses from the below candidates. A full list of candidates for all positions can be found at the Council website links at the bottom of this page.

Sport Bay of Plenty is an apolitical organisation. We do not endorse candidates in any elections, and the responses listed below are solely the opinions of candidates who submitted content.

Kawerau District Council

Craig McLean

Would like to see area for motorcycle recreation to get bikes off the streets. Continuing support for conventional sports. Mountain bike trail development including upgrades for disabled riders.

Vivienne Puti Wilson

Kia ora my name is Vivienne Puti Wilson, and I am standing to represent the community of Kawerau.

Kawerau is a unique town where locals enjoy a leisurely stroll or a brisk walk. We are fortunate to have free hot pools, a skatepark, a choice of gyms, the river and creek, a bowling club, and a sports club, to name a few.

I do see the potential in refurbishing the Ron Hardie centre to promote indoor activities and increase usage including after-hours i.e., roller-skating, badminton, ping-pong, and basketball. In saying that, what needs to be improved is how the community is consulted. They are the experts, and really need to have a say about how they want to improve physical activity in Kawerau.
