Adults

At Sport Bay of Plenty, we understand that keeping all age groups active and healthy is crucial for the wellbeing and the future of our communities.

Active adults set a positive example for younger generations and contribute to a healthier, and more resilient society. Join us in our mission to support and inspire adults to stay active and engaged in their health and wellbeing.

Tauranga walking groups

Walking with a group can help keep you motivated and provide an opportunity to make new friends while keeping physically active. It’s also a chance to get outside and enjoy nature and new places.

Our City on its Feet programme is about getting more people enjoying walking more often. Walking groups are found all around Tauranga, with group captains organising and supporting the groups.

With over 25 City on its Feet walking groups throughout the city, there will certainly be a group to suit you. If you would like to join, have a look at the latest timetable (link below) to find the closest group in your neighbourhood. Then contact the relevant group caption to get started.

Healthy Lifestyle Programme - Green Prescription

We have Green Prescription Advisors across the region to support inactive adults and families. Is that me? An inactive person is someone who does less than two and a half hours of moderate intensity physical activity throughout the week. You will know when you are doing moderate activity when you are breathing faster, your heart is beating a bit more and your body feels warmer but you can still hold a conversation.

If you are inactive, a health professional can refer you or your family for the six-month healthy lifestyle programme. Green Prescription focuses on supporting behavioural change by establishing sustainable physical activity and nutritional habits. With the support of an advisor, you will learn how to make lifestyle choices for a healthier future.

Activities at home

The COVID-19 pandemic saw the physical activity options of many temporarily limited. With people stuck indoors, our staff compiled resources and fun activities to help keep our community stay active, physical and mentally well and all from the comfort of their own home. Use these on rainy days, school holidays, working from home or to start your wellness journey in your own neighbourhood.

Exercise for mums

Congratulations on being a mum-to-be or new mum. Wherever you are in your motherhood journey, exercise has loads of benefits. Being active 30 minutes, every day can help by strengthening your muscles, heart and lungs, giving you the extra energy and strength needed for pregnancy and post-birth.

One of the biggest benefits is for your wellbeing. Exercise makes us feel better, and if you’re part of a group class, like aqua mums or yoga, there’s also the added bonus of socialising with other women who understand what it’s like to be pregnant or be a mum.

Exercise also improves posture, circulation and provides some relief from ailments such as leg cramps, constipation, high blood pressure, fatigue and bloating.

On our parents page, we look closer at some important things to consider and opportunities to get your babies and toddler moving too. You can also watch some helpful maternal health videos in our resources or look for exercise classes on our activity directory.

Helping our parents

While you’re here, let’s talk about helping the older population to keep moving. Sitting for long periods can lead to frailty, so if you’re able to inspire a senior member of your whānau to move, you’ll be providing them with a bunch of benefits. Such as:

  • Building muscle strength
  • Improving stability, balance and coordination
  • Increasing opportunities to socialise
  • Happier and healthier loved ones

If they are in Tauranga, scroll up for information on local walking groups. We also have a Seniors page packed with ideas including Keep on your Feet class information.
