Asking parents how sport can help them and their tamariki

Determining what is considered a good sporting experience for parents is a crucial factor in creating similarly enjoyable involvement for children, coaches, officials and other parents and guardians.

In keeping with our commitment to support parents in the Bay of Plenty, Sport Bay of Plenty’s Sport Development Team undertook a Parent Survey last year.

Between April and September, 467 parents and guardians were interviewed at local tournaments and events, capturing helpful insights, observations and connections along the way.

Parents are under increasing pressure to cater for an ever-growing sporting profile for their kids. With barriers such as cost, travel and work commitments on top, multiple sport commitments make it difficult for parents to provide what they feel their children need.

Sport Development’s Season Design programme aims to align sporting codes throughout the Bay of Plenty to have a defined participation window.

This lack of overlap will allow for optimal participation, removing some of the barriers parents face with multiple sport commitments and allowing for a more enjoyable experience for all involved in sport.
